NORTHWEST CONFERENCE – PERSON OF DISTINCTION AWARD
The Northwest Conference puts high value on celebrating our students, programs and communities throughout the school year. From “Leaders in Sportsmanship,” to “Coaches vs. Cancer” and “Only 7 Seconds,” The Northwest Conference consistently goes above and beyond with outreach to every school and their corresponding communities.
Each school in the NWC will have the opportunity to highlight someone from their community as a “Person of Distinction.” This honor will celebrate someone associated with each athletic program and draw a spotlight on the amazing selfless people who help make this conference so special!
Oak Harbor Athletics
Person of Distinction – Jay Long
For 35 years, Jay Long has been the voice of Oak Harbor High School athletics, bringing energy, professionalism, and passion to every game he has announced. Beginning his journey as a public address announcer in 1990, Jay has called over 1,000 games across football and basketball, making an indelible mark on the OHHS community and beyond. His expertise has extended to high-profile venues, including high school and college district tournaments, as well as 17 years of announcing at the prestigious Tacoma Dome state basketball tournaments.
A proud graduate of Oak Harbor High School’s Class of 1969, Jay was a multi-sport athlete, competing in basketball and track. He later pursued a degree in radio and television broadcasting from the University of Washington in 1974. Though his career path led him in a different direction, his love for announcing never wavered. In 1978, he returned to Whidbey Island, where he met the love of his life, Suzie. The two married in 1982, and in 1990, Jay began his tenure as the voice of the Wildcats. Suzie was by his side for 29 seasons of basketball games, and she also operated the football scoreboard for many years—a partnership that made their contributions to OHHS athletics even more meaningful.
Among the many games he has called, Jay’s most cherished memories include announcing Oak Harbor’s thrilling run to the 2006 State Championship in football. His voice became synonymous with Wildcat pride, continuing the legacy of only two other OHHS football announcers before him—John Vanderzicht (1950-1979) and Ted Knudsen (1980-1989).
Jay’s dedication to Oak Harbor athletics extends beyond the microphone. His commitment to the community, passion for the game, and ability to bring excitement to every call have left an enduring legacy. Oak Harbor High School and the entire community extend their deepest gratitude to Jay Long for his decades of service, unwavering spirit, and unforgettable voice.
